------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After seeing several pleas for help in running TERMINATE with QEMM, I thought
it was about time to update my help files to include Terminate v4.
BACKGROUND:
I have been using QEMM and DESQView for several years on a variety of
machines and it has performed flawlessly for me even doing some things that
others said couldn't be done ie: running my Colorado 350MB Tape drive in
one window with the BBS online in another. As noted in the title, I still
use QEMM v7.04 and DESQView 2.63 for one simple reason.... it works!
My current "TERMINATE" System is running on a Cx486DLC (really nothing
more that a 386DX40 with the Cyrix upgrade chip) with 8 MB RAM, AMD MathCo,
USR V34 33.6 modems, 1 internal (Com2) & 1 external (Com1) (2) WD 540MB
Hard Drives, (2) SCSI 2x Internal CD Drives running off the MediaVision
Sound Card, Colorado 350MB Internal Tape drive running off the floppy
controller and a Generic SVGA card with 1MB RAM. A very simple, basic and
stable system.
I'm using Intermail as my Mailer, Interecho as the mail Tosser, Allfix to
manage the Inbound/Outbound files and Terminate's HOST as my BBS System, all
under DESQView. The BBS System is using Com2 and Terminate is using Com1
for the Point System and normal Communications.
With this setup, I'm able to run The READER to permit user's to read/reply
to messages online, plus several doors including Tradewars and LORD, both
of which like to use memory.
This file includes screen shots of my DESQView setups as well as some of
the batch files I use to run the entire system. Since I don't use Windows
on this system, I use a portion of the Video card's RAM for DESQView. The
screen shots will show you how.
My system is setup as follows....
C:\__ <-- Root directory of drive C
|-TE <-- Terminate Directory
| |-ECHO <-- Message Directory
| |-IN <-- Inbound Mail/File Directory

These aren't all the directories but should give you an idea of how I have
my system setup. I like to keep directory names short as well as to
"group" related directories togather. I've found it help in managing the
Hard Drive and reducing disk fragmentation. Some folks dump ALL their
utilities into their DOS directory making it more difficult to remember
where or even if, a certain file or utility exists plus, the larger the
directory, the longer it takes DOS to search for that file name.
Now, for the DESQview-QEMM Setup.
CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 /SIZE=35504 C:\MEDVSN\TSLCDR.SYS /D:MVCD001 /R
NOTE: I use a 3 MB Ram Drive that speeds up the tossing of files
considerably. You may not need a RAM Drive quite as large or, you may not
have enough memory to allocate that much to a "temporary" drive.

NOTE: DGANSI has been loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file and this is the only
window (so far) that has used DGANSI as a "shared program". This is
because Intermail calls HOST when a "human" call comes in and permits the
use of DGANSI (the ANSI replacement) in the DOOR GAMES that require it.
That's about it! This is what works for MY system. Your mileage may vary
however, if you are having problems running Terminate or any of it's
many modules under QEMM or DESQView, this will at least, give you a
reference from which to trouble shoot your system.
I continue to use DESQView simply because it's much faster and more stable
for me than Windows, even tho I have Windows for Workgroups on my other
machine (486DX2\66 with 32 MB RAM).
